M30 Camshaft Nose Differences: 

-Carburated - Early M30 engines with distributors (E9 chassis, & E12/E24 08/1981 and earlier) 
--Visual ID #1 EARLY: Cam nose has two half-moon shaped prongs 

-L-Jetronic - M30's from 09/1981 to 01/1984. 
--Visual ID #2 MID: Cam nose has 1 half-moon shaped prong 

-Motronic - 01/1984 and later, 
--Visual ID #3 LATE: Cam nose has flat-face and dowel pin hole. 

** IMPORTANT: The BMW cross-over dates are NOT set in stone. Many of these cams/heads have been changed over the years and the only sure-fire way to know is to perform a visual inspection. All these cams are not interchangeable without changing the rest of the ignition system.
