M20 ? Early vs. Late main bearings. Early = ?e? blocks/ SINGLE TANG - Early main bearings have the same upper and lower shells. These shells have an oil groove and a single tang. Late = ?I? blocks/ DOUBLE TANG - Late main bearings have a different upper and lower shell. The upper shell has an oil groove and a single tang, the lower shell has a smooth face with two tangs. **Bear in mind that some early "I" engines were also equipped with the single-tangs. Before ordering main bearings you need to confirm which style bearing you need. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Potential issue and solution The ?EARLY STYLE ?e?? .25-UNDER & .50-UNDER BEARINGS are no longer available. All other bearing sets are still available at this time (7/19/12). Compatibility/Solutions? -You CANNOT simply retrofit a late bearing set into an early block. The BEST solution for the individual seeking NLA undersize single-tang bearings for their M20 ?e? block, is to purchase 2 sets of late ?I? bearings and simply pair up the halves that have the oiling-groove in them. Which M20 Compatible crank you have (your existing crank or one of our stroker kits), has nothing to do with what style main bearing you need. If anything is unclear, feel free to call.
